One winter when I was in high school, I had a playlist of music that I listened to almost every day. Well, every season in every year I have a playlist like that, but this one was special. I didn’t know it in the moment, but these songs would become a time machine to the quiet, snowy mornings that I first heard them. They were mostly singer-songwriter and soft rock; anything that moved me and made me think. What made them different was the melancholy yet peaceful stillness that they evoked.
My favorite from this bunch is “(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano” by Sampha. It’s simple; lovely vocals, heart-breaking lyrics, and perhaps the most beautiful piano melody I have ever heard.
It may not have the nostalgia for others that it has for me, but give it a try. It’s bound to make an impression.
