I like a lot of The Gaslight Anthem’s music, so when I saw that their lead singer, Brian Fallon, had a solo album, I decided to check it out.
The song “Honey Magnolia” quickly became one of my favorite songs. Told from both Fallon’s perspective and that of a girl, the lyrics are some of his best. Questions like “See, I don’t dig those kind of blues anymore” are answered by “But what if I did?” This kind of leads the listener to ask those questions as well (and maybe to imagine someone answering them). Then his voice breaks in these really interesting and beautiful ways that just make the already lovely lyrics hit even deeper.
It’s a song full of thought and emotion that can be positive or negative depending on what your answers are to Fallon’s questions. Will he “come runnin’ at the end of the line” before it’s too late? Listen and decide.
