Diving Woman by Japanese Breakfast
Bruce says:
I got into the music right off the bat. The background melody floats through the whole song and has a late 60’s psychedelic rock or experimental music vibe to it. The vocals needed a couple listens to. It’s different in that my ears are trying to hear the lyrics through the effects. But if you turn off that processing your brain does and listen to the voice as another instrument in the songs, it all works together. Here’s a new song to add to the playlist.
Molly says:
It’s interesting to me that this sounds like ’60s psychedelic music to you because, to me, it immediately brings to mind ’90s alternative. I was instantly drawn to the guitars that are reminiscent of bands like R.E.M. or Garbage. The closest comparison I can find for the vocals are those of The Cranberries. Both have the same breathy, mystical quality that, as you said, makes them more instrumental than narrative. The juxtaposition of these elements makes for something completely different that is more of an experience than merely a song.
Bruce pontificates:
Ok, three bands you mention, I have to chime in on: R.E.M. – go back to the earlier years and listen to “South Central Rain”. For The Cranberries a must listen for the vocals is, of course, “Zombie” (PLEASE don’t listen to the remakes!!) and for Garbage … well … “Hey Alexa, Volume 11. Alexa, play ‘Stupid Girl’ by Garbage.”
