I first heard this song in a movie. It was just the opening guitar chords, no lyrics, but its simple melancholy hinted at something deeper and caught my ear. Then a few weeks later, I came across the song again by chance on a random playlist I’d been listening to. The rest of the song, which turned out to be “Motion Sickness” by Phoebe Bridgers, did not disappoint.

The opening line of the chorus, “I have emotional motion sickness,” seemed funny, creative, and honest, and Bridgers’ voice, breathy yet powerful, blended perfectly with the guitars driving the song. It made for a great alternative ballad that stood starkly apart from the rest of modern music, and I couldn’t stop listening. It immediately became a part of my music library and spurred me to explore the rest of Bridgers’ catalog, which I highly recommend you do.

Check out the song (and equally cool video) below. If you like it, some other good ones by her include “Kyoto,” “I Know the End,” “Souvenir” with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, and “Didn’t Know What I Was in For” with Better Oblivion Community Center and Coner Oberst.
